Hornets trade veteran center Dwight Howard to the Nets

The Charlotte Hornets are coming off the second straight season missing the playoffs. The situation has pushed the franchise to make some major changes.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Hornets have made the decision to trade former All-Star center Dwight Howard to the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday morning in exchange for veteran Timofey Mozgov and a pair of second-round picks.

This will now mark Howard’s sixth different team over eight seasons since being traded from the Orlando Magic. The 32-year-old is coming off yet another productive campaign. He averaged a double-double with 16.6 points and 12.5 rebounds along with 1.6 blocks in 81 games played.

Charlotte was looking to move off the final year of the 32-year-old’s contract. The contract pays him $23.8 million for the 2018-19 season. It was originally a three-year, $70.5 million deal that he originally signed with the Atlanta Hawks.

However, things haven’t worked out with each of his last two stops as he has had issues with his teammates. The Hornets will now take on the final two years of Mozgov’s four-year, $64 million deal that owes him $32.7 million.

Brooklyn has opened up nearly $17 million in salary cap space next offseason that should allow them to sign two max contract players. They are expected to pursue a pair of All-Stars in Kyrie Irving and Jimmy Butler in the summer of 2019.
