Forbes Magazine Names Dallas Cowboys Most Valuable Team
The Dallas Cowboys are back at the top. Forbes Magazine has once again named the NFL team the most valuable team in the world. The Cowboys topped the list in 2017 as well.
On Wednesday, Forbes published their list of most valuable sports teams. Dallas was given a value of $4.8 billion, which is 14% higher than last year. In the next three spots were soccer teams Manchester United at $4.123 billion, Real Madrid at $4.088 billion and FC Barcelona at $4.064 billion. Rounding out the top five were the New York Yankees at $4.00 billion.
In 1989, Jerry Jones acquired 60% of the Cowboys for the price of $63 million and 100% of the stadium for $65 million. The team was losing over $1 million per month at the time.
In 1973, CBS was the owner of the Yankees and lost money when they sold the team to George Steinbrenner at a price of $8.7 million, after buying it just three years before at the price of $11.2 million.
Twenty-nine of the 50 teams on Forbes’ most valuable list are in the NFL. Four NFL teams, including the Cowboys, New England Patriots at $3.7 billion, New York Giants at $3.3 billion and Washington Redskins at $3.1 billion, are in the list’s top 10. Of the NFL’s 32 teams, just the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions were not in the top 50.
The top 50 included eight teams from the NBA with the top team the New York Knicks at $3.6 billion. Two other NBA teams the Los Angeles Lakers are $3.3 billion and the Golden State Warriors at $3.1 billion made the top 10. In 2010, the Warriors were sold for $450, which at the time was an NBA record.
The team that moved up the most in the list from last year was the Houston Rockets. Houston jumped 14 spots to No. 40 after being valued at $2.2 billion. The New York Jets fell the most in the listing, dropping from No. 13 to No. 21. The Cleveland Browns were No. 50 on the list with a value of $1.95 billion
No team from the NHL was listed in the top 50 by Forbes. In December of 2017, the New York Rangers were estimated to have a value of $1.5 billion by Forbes.
The top teams in sports are now earning more than at any previous time, with profits averaging $103 million which is 13% higher than in 2017. Just five teams on the list failed to reach $60 million in earnings.
