NFL to Release Clarification Video on New Helmet Rule
The NFL has a lot of work to do to clarify the new helmet rule which was passed in May. The controversial rule made it illegal for players to initiate contact with an opponent using their helmet.
The thinking behind the new helmet rule is to reduce the number of head injuries in NFL games. However, that sentiment has been lost as preseason has started and confusion abounds.
The issue is that players and coaches are confused about the new rule. Nobody is sure what is a foul and what isn’t. Anyone keeping an eye on NFL news this summer will have seen the widespread criticism of the new helmet rule.

In response to this, the NFL is preparing a tutorial video for officials, players and coaches to clarify new rule. According to ESPN, the league is talking daily about the new rule’s application in preseason games.
There is a scheduled conference call on Wednesday among game officials and the new rule is set to dominate talks.
Vice President of Officials Al Riveron will prepare the tutorial video with advice from other NFL executives. The video will address the “predictable hysteria†arising from the fact that it’s the first year of the new rule.

NFL Chief Medical Director and neurosurgeon Dr. Allen Sills underlined to ESPN the importance of reducing head and neck injuries.
“We want to send a consistent message that the helmet is not a weapon,†he said.
“But it is worn for protection, and it is for the well-being of the players who initiate the contact, not just the players on the receiving end.”
According to the NFL, it is expected to take around three years for the league to fully adjust to the new rule.
