Mike McCarthy wasn’t happy with the way the Packers fired him
It has been a few months since the Green Bay Packers made the decision to fire head coach Mike McCarthy after 12-plus seasons with the franchise.
It is something that he has stayed quite mum about it in the time that has followed. However, McCarthy recently held an interview with ESPN’s Rob Demovsky where he voiced that he didn’t like how the team handled the entire process.

“Frankly, no I did not,” McCarthy said. “As a head coach, I’ve always tried to stay immune to and stand in front of all the outside noise. That was always my focus with my players. It was always to protect them as much as possible from the drama. I think that’s important. And I stayed true to that to the last day. If we missed the playoffs, I expected change might happen. But the timing surprised me. Actually it stunned me. But time provides the opportunity for reflection and clarity, and that’s where I’m at now. And it’s clear to me now that both sides needed a change.”
What had caught many by surprise with the situation was the timing of the move. It was something that there were rumblings about, but it was expected that any change.
However, the Packers decided to move quickly on it mid-season despite the team already being in a tough position to make the playoffs. This was something that the organization has rarely done given the longevity of their past few coaches.

Nonetheless, it is a situation that they handled swiftly that has put the team in an entirely different situation. It also didn’t take long for them to find their next head coach in former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur.
Ultimately, only time will tell if this was the right decision for the franchise.
