Agent: Willie Cauley-Stein Needs Change of Scenery

The agent for Sacramento Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein encouraged the Kings to allow the center to become an unrestricted free agent.

Roger Montgomery from Roc Nation Sports said he was hopeful the Kings would’t present a qualifying offer to Cauley-Stein. Stein has played each of his first four seasons in the NBA for Sacramento since being selected No. 6 overall in the 2015 draft.

This month, the center’s rookie contract will expire. This gives him restricted free agent status, which means Sacramento is able to match any offers from other teams. That is if by the end of June the Kings extend a qualifying offer of over $6.265 million.

Montgomery said his client needed a fresh start making now a time for Cauley-Stein to move on. The former University of Kentucky star, who is 25, has career averages of 10.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, with a career shooting percentage of 53.4%.

Consistency is a trouble spot for the 7-footer. Cauley-Stein began the 2018-19 season averaging 17.4 points per game during the month of October, but those numbers fell after that. For example, during February and April, he averaged less than double-digits in scoring.

The Kings released a statement saying that Willie Cauley-Stein is a talented player who fits the team’s style of play.

However, Montgomery says the pieces have not been fitting together citing turnover for both the coaching staff and players for the Kings. In April, Luke Walton was hired as the new head coach replacing Dave Joerger.
