Patriots Lose Another Offensive Lineman to Injury

Starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn has been place on injured reserve by the New England Patriots because of a toe injury, said an NFL source. Wynn could return to play later this season.

A player put on IR during the season is not able to practice for a period of six weeks. As well as that, he is not eligible to play for eight weeks. That would make Wynn’s earliest return on November 17 when the Patriots play the Philadelphia Eagles.

Losing Wynn is another big blow to the offensive line of the Patriots. The line has dealt with a series of injuries as well as retirements since the beginning of spring. The injury sustained by Wynn appears to have occurred late during the first quarter of New England’s rout of Miami on Sunday.

Wynn was taken in the first round of the 2018 draft from Georgia and missed last season after tearing an Achilles.

New England may have to move Joe Thuney, its starting left guard, over to left tackle. He practiced there during spring and the early part of training camp. Thuney filled in as the team brought Wynn back slowly from his Achilles tear.

Another option of the Patriots would be using Marshall Newhouse. The veteran of nine years was just signed last Wednesday and after Wynn’s injury, he took his place.

On Tuesday, the Patriots signed Caleb Benenoch a free-agent tackle to add depth to the OL. Benenoch was drafted in 2016 by Tampa Bay and the 305-pound tackle has played in 35 games during his career with 22 starts.

Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has lauded the coaching of Dante Scarnecchia the offensive line coach for helping make everything work out despite the many roster additions and injuries.
