Anthony Davis Already Writing Himself Into Lakers History Book

When Anthony Davis decided to join the Los Angeles Lakers, the prospect of making NBA history must have been crucial.

That’s exactly what Anthony Davis did against the Memphis Grizzlies during his fourth Lakers game on Tuesday.

Anthony Davis starred during LA’s 120 – 91 comeback win against Memphis, with 40 points and 20 rebounds.

He is the sixth Lakers player to produce a 40 point, 20 rebound game. He joins the prestigious company of Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, George Mikan and Shaquille O’Neal. 

O’Neal was the last Lakers player to do so, in 2003. The last time Davis did it was in 2016.

This is all the more impressive due to the fact that he only played 31 minutes. That makes him the first player to have a 40-20 game in less than 31 minutes since 1955. The next quickest 40-20 game was achieved in 33 minutes by Baylor in 1961.

As well as that, Davis set a franchise record for free throws made in a game with 26. He is the first player since Michael Jordan in 1987 to make 26 or more free throws. He is the fourth player in NBA history overall to do it.

“It’s an honor to be on that list with those legends but more important is we got the win,” said Davis.

“It was a grind in the first half and my teammates trusted me. I just tried to be a monster on the glass.”

LeBron James finished the game with 23 points.

“This solidifies why we went out and got him. He was big time for us,” said LeBron James

“Everyone was playing well,” Davis said. 

“I was just trying to be aggressive. It was a close game until the third quarter. I knew some of their players were in foul trouble and tried to get them out of the game.”
