LeSean McCoy on His ‘Teacher’ Brian Westbrook

Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy (31), has paid tribute to his mentor, Brian Westbrook, ahead of his first Super Bowl.

The mentor/mentee dynamic has come into focus for LeSean McCoy in the year that he’s become an NFL mentor.

Despite his reduced 2020 role, LeSean McCoy says it’s a ‘dream come true’ to make it to the Super Bowl. He has the tutelage of Brian Westbrook to thank, and now he is happy to pass his knowledge on.

“I think about a lot of stuff I know now, he’s taught me,” McCoy said.

“Brian was a great leader, showing me the ups and downs, what to do, what not to do. Teach me how to block. Teach me what to look for in the line of scrimmage. He was a class act.”

“It’s definitely like that, it’s weird,” McCoy said.

“I remember going to the meeting rooms in ’09 and trying to get the answers from Brian. Coach would ask me a question, and I would be like, ‘Brian, what is it?’ but he would never tell me. But after he would always teach me it. So now, when I’m with some of the young guys, they ask me questions, I’m looking at them like ‘I can’t tell you, but I can teach you, so you know for next time. The roles have reversed.”

After over a decade in the NFL, McCoy will savour every last minute of the Super Bowl, whether he is active or not.

“This is a dream come true,” he said.

“I always thought of it, but I never thought it could come true. It’s the biggest stage. There are so many great players who have played this game that haven’t been to the Super Bowl. Tons of them. I’m just happy to be part of it.”
