Carolina Panthers bring back QB Kyle Allen for one more year

Following the 2019 season, there are plenty of questions surrounding the Carolina Panthers’ long-term future at the quarterback position.

The Panthers have provided themselves with a bit more stability to the spot with the decision to bring back Kyle Allen on a one-year deal, according to David Newton of ESPN.

The Carolina Panthers on Tuesday signed quarterback Kyle Allen, set to become an exclusive-rights free agent, to a one-year deal.

Carolina now has three quarterbacks — Cam Newton, Will Grier, and Allen — under contract for the 2020 season.

Allen had started games last season after Pro Bowler Cam Newton suffered a foot injury that kept him out for the rest of the year. He initially found success winning his first four games as the starter, which made him the first quarterback in league history to win his first five starts with no interceptions.

However, things fell apart after that, with the Panthers dropping well out of the playoff picture. Carolina dropped seven out of their final eight games that pushed them well below the .500 mark. Allen had proven to be a reliable option but was unable to lead the offense with his arm.

The decision to bring him back into the fold for another season provides the franchise with more stability at the position. The bigger question lies with Newton, who is entering the final year of his five-year, $103.8 million deal.

There have been serious questions about his long-term future with the Panthers. The 2020 season could be his make-or-break campaign.
