Texans ink Laremy Tunsil to massive contract extension

The Houston Texans have been quite a busy team this offseason that has seen them undergo a few notable changes to their roster ahead of the 2020 season.

The Texans have continued shaping their team for the long haul with the decision to agree to a three-year extension with Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil. (H/T Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk)

The new deal will average $22 million per season. It includes $57 million guaranteed, with a $13 million signing bonus, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

There had been ongoing talks between both sides for the last several weeks, which had seen things gear toward a significant deal. The new lucrative extension will keep the 25-year-old on the team for the long haul protecting star quarterback Deshaun Watson’s blindside.

The Texans have been quite active, with some notable offseason moves ahead of the draft. That saw him surprisingly move on from star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in a trade to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson. It immediately put many question marks around the franchise’s motives moving forward as Hopkins was one of the critical centerpieces of the offense.

However, the decision to retain Tunsil on a long-term extension does speak to Houston’s motivation to provide their Pro Bowl quarterback with the necessary protection. If the team is going to take the next step forward, it will need to give Watson the proper protection and weapons in the passing game to utilize. There will likely be some other significant moves ahead for the franchise before next season.
