Tom Brady brings credibility to long-suffering Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tom Brady has already made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers relevant again.

After signing with them in free agency two months ago, the interest in a long moribund franchise shot through the proverbial roof. When the NFL announced its schedule on Thursday night, Tampa Bay had five prime-time games, the most of any franchise.

The six-time Super Bowl champion comes to Tampa after 20 years with the New England Patriots. After decades of success, the supporting cast was beginning to erode quickly. Brady wisely moved on for a new challenge in the twilight of his career, getting two star receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Evans, one of the league’s most underrated stars, spoke to Buccaneers beat writer Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times and expressed what Brady’s arrival means to him:

..The opportunity to get Tom Brady. Like, that’s Tom Brady, bro. Like that’s the greatest of all-time. He’s franchise changer. Like he’s about to change the franchise. Like, ticket sales are going through the roof, like prime time games. And he understands the game of football to nobody else understands that level besides the greats and it’s going to be great to work with him, you understand what I’m saying. The young receiving corps we got, the tight ends we’ve got, we’ve got Gronk coming in…it’s going to be great for the city. And it’s going to be just great overall. Hopefully we have a great season, everybody stays healthy and it pans out the way we want.”

At 43 years old, Brady has plenty to prove. Can he bounce back from — statistically speaking — one of his worst years? Can he win without Bill Belichick, the only head coach he has known on the NFL level? Can he succeed without the structure in New England and the ownership Robert Kraft provided there?
All of those questions are undoubtedly going to fuel the greatest quarterback to ever live. This is good news for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their fan base, who are looking for their first postseason victory since winning Super Bowl XXXVII over the Oakland Raiders… in the 2002 season.
It’s going to be one of the talking points of the season, watching the league’s oldest quarterback try to reach back and create magic one more time for a team which hasn’t had any in quite a few years.
