5 quarterback battles to watch in the 2020 NFL season

The quarterback landscape has been turned upside down in the NFL ahead of 2020. We look at 5 QB depth battles to keep an eye on.

5. Washington Redskins

This shouldn’t be a battle, but we’ve seen stranger things. The Redskins have a second-year quarterback in Dwayne Haskins, a former first-round pick with good upside. However, Washington has a new coaching staff led by Ron Rivera. Rivera could be going into training camp with an open mind.

If Haskins stumbles, Kyle Allen was brought in from the Carolina Panthers — Rivera’s old team — to be a backup. Keep an eye on the situation if Haskins falters early.

4. Las Vegas Raiders

This isn’t going to be a battle in camp, but it could be early in the season. Derek Carr is on thin ice in Las Vegas, as the Raiders try to figure out how to compete with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, the Raiders are attempting to be exciting and competitive in their first year as Sin City’s team.

If Carr doesn’t play well in September — or if the team gets off to a slow start — enter Marcus Mariota. General manager Mike Mayock paid Mariota $17.5 million to come to town. Not chump change.

3. Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins want Tua Tagovailoa to be the future. If he’s healthy, and all indications are that he is, look for him to immediately push veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick. Miami is in the process of completely overhauling the program, but second-year head coach Brian Flores may feel compelled to go with the high-upside youngster immediately if he looks solid over the summer.

2. Los Angeles Chargers

Very similar to the Dolphins, the Chargers have a veteran quarterback trying to ward off a young competitor. Los Angeles is moving into SoFi Stadium and trying to create some buzz around the team. Doing so with Tyrod Taylor under center is going to be a tough chore. Justin Herbert, the sixth-overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, makes much more sense. However, he comes in as somewhat of a raw product. Can he immediately take the reins and help Los Angeles back to the postseason?

1. Chicago Bears

All signs point to the Bears riding with Nick Foles over Mitch Trubisky. Chicago traded a fourth-round pick to acquire Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he has three years worth of guaranteed money remaining on his deal. Meanwhile, Trubisky is slated for free agency after this season with the team declining his fifth-year option. Still, if Trubisky dazzles in camp and preseason, maybe he gets one final chance.
