New England Patriots Must Rebuild Offsense This Offseason

While Tom Brady celebrates his seventh Super Bowl win, the New England Patriots are still scrambling to replace him.

The New England Patriots were sniffing around both Carson Wentz and Matthew Stafford, according to reports.

They are also monitoring the situations of Deshaun Watson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Marcus Mariota and Sam Darnold.

According to the Athletic’s Jeff Howe, Bill Belichick is considering all possible quarterback options this offseason. “If a quarterback has been perceived to be available, the Patriots have picked up the phone,” Howe wrote.

Howe also reports that the New England Patriots still haven’t ruled out bringing Cam Newton back.

Cam Newton’s Tom Brady audition didn’t work out well for him or the team. In fairness to him, contracting Covid-19 early in the season halted his progress. However, his comments throughout the season make for grimmer and grimmer reading. In October, he admitted to not living up to his own standards.

“I know what I’m capable of. My standard is extremely high and I haven’t been meeting it. My personal standard. That’s how I feel,” he said.

In November, his exasperation was growing. 

“I’m getting tired of sucking, simple,” Newton said. 

“As a competitor, you know what your standard is and taking pride in your work, that’s what it comes down to.”

By December, Newton was downright angry, saying that he’d ‘sacrificed so much’ to no avail. “Obviously, the contract is what it is. Submitting myself to this team is something I’ve been doing since day one. Being accessible. Yeah, it’s frustrating. It makes you mad.”

It’s not a pretty picture at quarterback for New England, and that’s not their only worry. The Patriots offense failed to muster 10 passing touchdowns last season. As a result, they will likely be in the market for a wide receiver as well. 

Soon-to-be free agents Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Corey Davis, Kenny Golladay should all be on their radar.
