2021 NFL free agency winners: Chargers, others do well
In 2021 NFL free agency winners, the Los Angeles Chargers and four other teams are highlighted as our winners.
5. New York Jets
After finishing with a 2-14 record, it was painfully obvious the Jets needed to complete revamp the roster. After swapping out Adam Gase for Robert Saleh at head coach in January, Gang Green continued to work in free agency. In the opening hours of the tampering period, general manager Joe Douglas came to terms with wide receiver Corey Davis before landing linebacker Jarrod Davis on a one-year deal and edge rusher Carl Lawson on a three-year pact. Well done.

4. San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers didn’t go on a spending spree. However, they were able to retain Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams after a bidding war with Kansas. They also added center Alex Mack, who enjoyed phenomenal success with Kyle Shanahan, the former offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons and current Niners head coach. Factor in the re-signings of fullback Kyle Juszczyk and corner Jason Verrett, and San Francisco did a nice job.
3. Cleveland Browns
The Browns are coming off an 11-win season, but needed to work on shoring up the defense. Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry did exactly that with the signing of star safety John Johnson to a three-year pact, stealing him away from the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson and cornerback Troy Hill both come over from the Rams, giving Cleveland a real reason to believe the secondary is much-improved.

2. Los Angeles Chargers
This was a very strong 2021 NFL free agency period from the Chargers. After watching rookie quarterback Justin Herbert light it up being a makeshift and injury-ravaged offensive line, general manager Tom Telesco has vowed to fix the issue. He started out strong with the signings of guard Matt Feiler and All-Pro center Corey Lindsley, giving Herbert protection from pressure up the middle.
1. Washington Football Team
For years, Washington won free agency because it spent the most. This time around, the Football Team won free agency because it spent wisely. Many teams shelled out more, but none got better value. Washington added a pair of stars coming off their rookie deals in receiver Curtis Samuel and corner William Jackson, both coming over from their respective teams on three-year contracts. Both should be core pieces going forward for the reigning division champs.
