Without Carson Wentz, Colts face a few options

The Indianapolis Colts are going to be without quarterback Carson Wentz for awhile. Here’s what they can do in the meantime.

Not a great start to the season for the Indianapolis Colts and new quarterback Carson Wentz.

Last week, Wentz hurt his foot during a play in practice. After a weekend of waiting to see whether Wentz would choose rehab or surgery, the Colts now have their answer. Indianapolis will be without its starting signal-caller for 5-12 weeks as the former Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick goes under the knife.

So while Wentz is getting ready to return — whether it’s in Week 1 or 8, here are a few options for Colts general manager Chris Ballard to consider:

Trade for a veteran: The Colts could certainly move a late or mid-round draft pick to satisfy this need. Nick Foles, who won a Super Bowl in Philadelphia with current Colts head coach Frank Reich as his offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, is imminently gettable. The cost would be almost nothing, as Foles is the third-stringer in Chicago.

Stay the course with the youngster: Reich talked to the media on Monday in the wake of Wentz’s latest update, and he stated the team would go with second-year quarterback Jacob Eason until further notice. Eason was a fifth-round pick out of Georgia last year, known for his huge arm. However,  he’s yet to take an NFL snap and with Indy hoping to make a run this season, starting him against the early portion of the schedule (vs. Seahawks, vs. Rams, at Titans, at Dolphins, at Ravens) seems like a huge ask.

Truly wait and see: If the Colts think Wentz can legitimately be back in five weeks, they could hold off on giving up any draft picks. At the same time, this is a huge risk if they don’t believe in Eason, because if there is even a small setback, Indy is suddenly forced to either make a deal at the last moment or go into Week 1 scrambling. Neither scenario is ideal.

For now, the Colts have time on their side. The regular season is more than a month away, and while Wentz missing his first camp with the team is a blow, it’s not a season-ending situation.

Indianapolis seemingly is willing to roll with Eason at the moment, but should it feel Wentz will miss regular-season games, don’t be surprised if Ballard makes a move.
