Eagles rookie DeVonta Smith set to miss 2-3 weeks with sprained MCL

The injury occurred during Saturday’s practice as he attempted to catch a low pass from second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts. After the play, he didn’t participate in the rest of the session.

Although the injury will keep him out of action for likely the entire preseason, it shouldn’t bleed into the 2021 regular season. The Eagles are hoping Smith can play a significant role in the passing game.

The Alabama product is entering the league with plenty of hype after an impressive 2020 season. The 22-year-old earned the Heisman Trophy after recording 117 catches for 1,856 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns.

His absence for the next few weeks will force him to miss valuable practice time and experience in preseason action. It will push Jalen Reagor into the top receiving option spot, but he’s struggled in training camp.

Reagor failed the team’s conditioning test and entered camp with a lower-body injury. He’s also dealing with the recent loss of a close family friend.

As Smith nears closer to a return, the Eagles will closely monitor his health as he enters his rookie campaign.
