NFL Week 3 reaction: Notes and observations
It’s time for some NFL Week 3 reaction, as most of the games are in the books. There’s plenty to get to from a wild day of Sunday action.
– The Baltimore Ravens are living dangerously. After a few dropped would-be touchdowns from Hollywood Brown, the Ravens found themselves trailing the Detroit Lions by a 17-16 count in the final minute, facing 4th and 19 deep in their own territory. Somehow, they converted and then lucked out when the officials didn’t notice a delay of game penalty before the penultimate snap, which would have knocked them out of field goal range. On the final snap, kicker Justin Tucker set a new NFL record by hitting a 66-yard field goal with a bounce off the crossbar.

– The New York Jets might be the worst team in football. New York watched as rookie quarterback Zach Wilson threw two more interceptions, bringing his total to seven through three games. How bad is that? Drew Lock and Carson Wentz tied for the league lead in 2020 with 15. Wilson and the Jets were shut out on Sunday in Denver, losing 26-0 to the Denver Broncos. The defense stinks, the offense could be historically bad and the coaching staff is really young. Yikes.
– Justin Fields has a miserable debut. The Ohio State product only completed 6-of-20 passes for 68 yards. Meanwhile, he was sacked six times and losing 67 yards on those plays. Chicago was blasted 26-6 by the Cleveland Browns, who sent the Bears back to the proverbial drawing board after they only mustered 47 yards of total offense. For Fields, it was an embarrassing way to begin what could end up being a fine career.

– The New Orleans Saints finally go home. After being on the road for the past three weeks, the Saints will host a game at the Superdome this Sunday when the New York Giants come to town. New Orleans did a terrific job, beating the Green Bay Packers in Jacksonville before topping the New England Patriots in Week 3 after a loss the weekend prior to the Carolina Panthers. At 2-1, the Saints are in a great spot to make a push in the fall, and it starts with the winless Giants.
– We have a huge game this coming Sunday in the AFC between the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins. The Colts are 0-3 while the Dolphins are 1-2. Whoever loses will be in full-on reeling mode, while the winner at least steadies itself a bit. The Colts obviously need it more, but this is really a must-win on both sides.
