Cardinals Coach Kliff Kingsbury ecstatic about trading for Zach Ertz

Following months of trade speculation, former Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz had his situation resolved with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Arizona Cardinals traded rookie cornerback Tay Gown and a 2022 fifth-round pick to the Eagles for Ertz. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury expressed his excitement to have the Super Bowl champion tight end aboard.

“I’m excited,” Kingsbury said via Darren Urban of the team website. “I’ve heard nothing but good things about him. I think he’ll fit right in with this locker room and I think (G.M.) Steve (Keim) did a tremendous job getting that done.”

This season, Ertz hasn’t put up strong numbers with 18 receptions for 189 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He played as the backup to Dallas Goedert in Philadelphia, significantly reducing his role.

The Cardinals’ need to acquire Ertz came after tight end Maxx Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. He finished the campaign with 16 catches for 193 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Ertz will have the opportunity to step in as the starting tight end in Arizona immediately. He will have the chance to work with star quarterback Kyler Murray, who has already made a strong early case the NFL MVP this season.

The 30-year-old will have the chance to return to producing as he did a few seasons ago. He was regarded as one of the game’s best tight ends, earning three consecutive Pro Bowl selections after notching more than 800 receiving yards with at least touchdowns in each campaign.

Beyond that, it’s a move that adds another proven weapon for Murray to utilize in the Cardinals’ explosive offense.
