Panthers are not looking to trade superstar RB Christian McCaffrey

The Carolina Panthers wrapped up another campaign falling well short of vying for the NFL playoffs.

It’s again led to chatter concerning star running back Christian McCaffrey’s long-term future in Carolina. General manager Scott Fitterer voiced on Monday that the team has no intentions of moving the Pro Bowler.

“There was a report back in November that we were actively trying to trade him, and I told him that was not true,” Fitterer via ESPN. “What I did tell him was, ‘Hey, listen, I’ll take any call. Call and make any offer you want.’

“‘That doesn’t mean we’ll do it. That doesn’t mean we’re shopping you.’ I look at Christian as a foundation piece on this team. We’re a better team when he’s on the field. He’s one of the elite players in the NFL.”

Since McCaffrey inked the four-year, $64 million extension, he’s struggled to stay on the field in each of the last two seasons. He’s played in only 10 out of the previous 33 possible games, including missing 10 out of the last 17 contests due to a hamstring injury and a left ankle sprain.

McCaffrey is still a game-changing talent when he is on the field, but it’s been his inability to stay healthy that has worked against him. The Panthers clearly want to build with him as the offense’s centerpiece.

The bigger question remains on the team’s future under center as Sam Darnold struggled to prove he could provide stable play. Meanwhile, Cam Newton looks to be past the point of being an effective quarterback.
