Rams place superstar WR Cooper Kupp on IR with ankle injury

The disappointing downward slide for the Los Angeles Rams continues to pile on after dropping their third straight game.

The Rams took another hit after star wide receiver Cooper Kupp underwent ankle surgery. It will require him to miss at least the next four games on the injured reserve.

“Obviously you never ever replace a player like Cooper Kupp, but we’ve got to figure out the best way to accentuate the skill sets of the guys that will be playing,” head coach Sean McVay said via ESPN.

Kupp suffered the injury after attempting to catch a pass in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was unable to get off the field on his own without putting any weight on his right ankle.

The reigning Super Bowl MVP had been putting together another stellar campaign as the Rams’ lone bright spot. He currently ranks second with 72 receptions, fifth with 812 receiving yards, and tied for fifth with six touchdowns.

Kupp will likely miss five to six weeks with the injury, which could see him sit out the rest of the season if the Rams fall out of playoff contention. Los Angeles faces a significant uphill battle to get back into postseason position.

Kupp’s absence pushes offseason addition Allen Robinson to the forefront as the top receiving option. Robinson has struggled to find his footing in his first campaign with Los Angeles, recording 29 receptions for 292 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, quarterback Matthew Stafford is still working his way through the concussion protocol after missing Week 10 action.
