49ers’ Kyle Shanahan will ‘probably’ announce backup QB before Week 1
The San Francisco 49ers were thought to potentially have a quarterback controversy coming into this season’s training camp. Trey Lance and Brock Purdy were thought to be battling it out for the top spot on the depth chart.
That didn’t turn out to be the case. Purdy has already convinced head coach Kyle Shanahan, who intends to start him for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The real question now is who will be the backup behind Purdy. Veteran newcomer Sam Darnold looks like a solid choice over Lance, who continues to struggle when on the field for San Francisco.
On Tuesday, Shanahan let it be known that he might announce the backup ahead of the 49ers’ season opener.
Shanahan said during his Tuesday press conference, via NBCSportsBayArea.com, that he’s “probably†going to announce a backup quarterback — either Trey Lance or Sam Darnold — before the team’s season opener against the Steelers. But that announcement won’t happen before San Francisco plays its preseason finale against the Chargers on Friday.

At this point in time, all signs seem to be pointing in Darnold’s direction as he has played really well during the NFL preseason thus far and definitely has the experience at playing the position from his time with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.
However, Shanahan could still go with the young quarterback and surprise everyone with his decision. Although right now, it looks like Darnold’s job to lose.
