Daniel Jones: ‘I’m Playing To Win Games’

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones says he isn’t paying any attention to the external noise around his performances.

This is the sensible course, as the outside noise is calling for the Giants to make a change at quarterback. Daniel Jones threw two interceptions on a 44.3 passer rating in the 28-6 defeat to Minnesota on Sunday.

He failed to score any points in spite of breaching the red zone twice in the fourth quarter. Hopefully his professional pride isn’t too fragile, because Minnesota linebacker Jonathan Greenard said the Vikings players began to pity Jones as the home crowd booed.

In mitigation for Daniel Jones, he is coming off the back of an injury hit 2023 season. He made just 6 appearances last year, however this works the other way too.

In his absence, Tommy DeVito acquitted himself fantastically. We all know the saying about the backup quarterback being the most popular guy in town.

Battling for fitness, form and respect, Jones says only the opinions of those in the organization matter to him.

“I’ve said a number of times I’m concerned about the people in this building,” he said

“I think I’ve got plenty of help, plenty of good coaching, plenty of good teammates to work with here.

“In terms of other people and what they have to say, what they think and their perspective and what their observations are not really important to me.”

New York’s next opponents, the Commanders, just conceded 37 points in their opening game. Jones might have an easier time of it against Washington, and he needs to.

“I’m playing to win games. Playing to lead the team,” Jones said when asked if he was playing to keep his starting job. “Lead the team to score points and win games. That’s always been my focus. I know I can do that. I’ve got to do it, got to do it well.”
