LeBron James wants to stay with Lakers beyond NBA trade deadline

Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ shocking trade for star guard Luka Doncic, the conversation immediately shifted toward LeBron James’ future with Los Angeles.

It didn’t take long for that situation to garner clarity, as James reportedly desires to remain with the Lakers through this week’s trade deadline.

The four-time NBA champion is one of two players in the league that possesses a no-trade clause that would negate any move the Lakers could make.

He currently holds a player option worth roughly $52.6 million for next season, which would be an NBA record 23rd campaign. James has complete control over his playing future and should receive clarity next offseason.

There are already reports surfacing that Doncic’s arrival could lead to James inking an extension with the Lakers over the summer.

Meanwhile, James is gearing up to play alongside Doncic, who could return over the weekend on Saturday night at home against the Indiana Pacers.

The five-time All-Star is still working his way back from a calf strain that he suffered on Christmas Day. During his introductory press conference on Tuesday morning, Doncic voiced that this marks the first time that he allowed his injury to fully heal before stepping back onto the court.

“For the first time, I took my time (to) get it to heal 100%,” Doncic said of his return via The Associated Press. “Other times, I think I just wanted to go back to the court playing basketball, and I really (wouldn’t) be healthy 100%. This time I just took my time, which was the normal amount of time to get back to 100%.”
