Andrew Luck Still Not Throwing a Football

Injured Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck refused to give a timeline for his return in an interview on Monday.

Speaking publicly for the first time since Dec 29, he did reveal that he hasn’t yet thrown an NFL football.

Andrew Luck had surgery on his right shoulder in January 2017. Since then, his fitness has been a mystery, with mixed messages coming out of the Colts camp. Last June, Jim Irsay said that Andrew Luck’s recovery was going ‘tremendously’.

Two months afterwards, the Colts owner said that Luck would likely only miss one or two games. Instead, the quarterback missed the entire season and updates have been few far and between.

We do know that Andrew Luck practised for a couple of weeks in October. However, he was shut down and spent 6 weeks in the Netherlands for rehab. In early 2018, he worked with experts in Southern California to get fit.

In spite of all this, the 28 year old says he’s feeling optimistic about his injury:

“There is a timetable, but I’m not going to share it with you guys. I’m very, very confident and very, very optimistic I’m going to be absolutely fine and come back better than I was. I’ll be a better quarterback, a better teammate, a better person.”

It appears as though the Indianapolis Colts and Andrew Luck are being extremely cautious with his return to the field. Understandable, given the number of setbacks from an injury which he originally sustained in Week 3 of the 2015 season. He is even working with a reduced-sized football to improve his throwing motion.

“There’s a process,” Luck said. “I’ve gone and skipped steps before and paid for it. Been in pain and not able to help the team. Embarrassed, guilty, whatever. I’m not going to do that again.

“I wouldn’t say [I’m] changing my throwing motion. There are things in my throwing motion that I can do better from the ground up, and that’s a big part of what I’ve been working on, making sure I’m using my body as effectively as possible to throw a football and not over- or under-compensate in any way.”
