Canadian Fans Cheer on Their Gold Medal Hockey Team
Hockey to Canadians is like the NFL to Americans and Soccer to the rest of the world. Canadians from one coast to the other took to the streets on Sunday in a hockey-crazed country following their country’s gold medal victory in the 2014 Sochi Olympics hockey tournament.
Hockey fans across Canada were at bars watching the early Sunday start to see their team capture Olympic Gold.
Amongst the diehard fans was Toronto Mayor Rob Ford who was at a local bar in downtown Toronto that exploded with a roar as Team Canada defeated Sweden 3-0 for its second straight Olympic gold in men’s hockey.
Beer started flowing in many bars as soon as the puck dropped in the first period thanks to relaxed liquor enforcement in Toronto.
Fans across the country were saying that hockey is what Canada is all about. One said that if you want to define Canada, wait until you watch a hockey game.
Fans were up early in the morning before the sun to prepare for the Sunday morning final. The bars were a stream of red and white with maple leafs seen everywhere.
Fans could be heard yelling that Canada was the world’s No. 1 hockey team following the 3-0 win on Sunday morning.
Following the game fans, many full of beer, spilled into the city streets of Toronto paralyzing downtown intersections.
In Vancouver, even the snow and no liquor could not stop fans from rising early and then hitting the streets in celebration following the win.
Some fans did not even go to bed on Saturday to make sure they would have a spot at their local bar to watch the first puck drop.
Fans in Montreal packed downtown bars and pubs to watch the final. Even a group of women joined in when they arrived in their pajamas to watch their hockey heroes.
The hockey faithful of Canada jumped from their chairs and waved their red and white flags from balconies, windows and passing cars when the final whistle blew making Canada the No. 1 hockey country in the world.
Fans watched quietly as each player from Canada received their gold medals, with tears running down the faces of many onlookers.
Sidney Crosby’s breakaway goal in the second period cemented the lead for Canada and was the game’s biggest highlight.
Crosby pleased his fans back home as the said he is always where he has to be at the right moment.
Stephen Harper, the country’s Prime Minister even joined in saying that the exciting victory by the great group of players demonstrated again that hockey is truly Canada’s game.
Justin Trudeau, the Liberal leader from Canada tweeted that Hockey is OUR game and congrats to the players of Team Canada on helping complete a Canadian sweep of gold in hockey at Sochi.
Last Thursday, the women’s hockey team from Canada defeated the U.S. after rallying from a two-goal deficit to win in overtime.
Now, fans across Canada can go back to cheering for their local NHL or AHL teams while they wait for four more years to pass, to once again cheer on their national teams in South Korea in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
