Christian Yelich Hits for the Cycle a Second Time This Season

On Monday, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich hit for the cycle versus the same team for a second time this season becoming the first Major League Baseball player ever to do so.

Christian Yelich, who on August 30 against Cincinnati hit for the cycle, accomplished the same rare feat again on September 17 or just 18 days later. He became just the fifth MLB player to hit for the cycle more than once in the same season.

Following the game on Monday night, Yelich said that many great players have played the game and it just shows how strange it can be.

The Milwaukee outfielder, who was traded to the Brewers by Miami during the offseason, added that a great deal of luck is part of the equation as well. He said it was hard enough getting four hits in one game, let alone all of them being the type needed to complete the cycle.

Yelich started his cycle with a single during the first inning, followed by a double during the third and a fifth-inning two-run home run. Each of his first three hits was off Anthony DeSclafani the Reds’ starting pitching. He completed the cycle with a triple that knocked in two runs during the sixth off Reds reliever Jesus Reyes.

Following the game, Yelich received the ball that he hit for the home run from a young fan of the Brewers in exchange for Yelich signing a bat.

During Yelich’s first cycle on August 30, he was 6-for-6 on the night in a 10-inning 13-12 victory by the Brewers.

Only Fred Clarke hit two cycles against the same opponent during his playing career, but Clarke did so in 1901 and in 1903.

Christian Yelich has feasted on Reds pitching this season with 24 hits in 48 official at-bats, seven home runs, 17 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

The Brewers as a team, which Yelich will say is far more important than his hitting for cycles, are in a playoff race in the National League Central.

Milwaukee is currently in second place trailing the first place Chicago Cubs by 2 ½ games. The Brewers hold the No. 1 wildcard spot in the NL with a three-game lead over St. Louis and 3 ½ games over Colorado.

Milwaukee has 11 games left in the regular season, while Chicago has 12 left to play.
