Due to Baltimore Unrest, Camden Yards Will be Empty When Orioles Play White Sox on Wednesday
Due to the growing unrest in Baltimore, stemming from citizen protests after another black man died in a police incident, on Tuesday the Orioles made the stunning announcement that Wednesday’s game against the White Sox at Camden Yards would be closed to the public.
Team executives must have felt there were no other options, having already postponed the first two games of the series. There are only so many opportunities to reschedule makeup games, so missing a third would likely make things even more difficult down the road.
The O’s tweeted out the official press release:
In recent day, the situation in Baltimore has really destabilized, with rioters wreaking havoc in the downtown area, including the area near Camden Yards. Public schools have been shut down and the city’s mayor has imposed a 10 p.m.-5 a.m. curfew.
Next up for the Orioles was to be a three-game home stand against the Rays on May 1-3, which has been preemptively addressed, in case conditions in Baltimore do not improve. The O’s and Rays will now play their three-game series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
Orioles fans with tickets to any of the games will have options to exchange them for other dates. The two games that were postponed are now scheduled to be played as a doubleheader on May 28.
