Eagles’ Offense Soars Against Redskins

The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled their fast-paced offense under head coach Chip Kelly for the first time last night against the Washington Redskins, and they did not disappoint. The Eagles ran 53 total plays in the first half, the most since 1998, and piled up 322 yards. They slowed down dramatically in the second half, but the first half blitz was enough to earn them a 33-27 victory. They were 3.5 point underdogs coming into Washington.

“I’ve never been a part of anything like it,” Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said. “When the first quarter was over, I thought we was about to go to go into halftime. It was unreal. The only thing I could tell myself was, ‘It’s going to be a long season.’ ”

“That was the first time I’ve used oxygen since college. It wears on you, but I think it wears on the defense a lot more,” Eagles center Jason Kelce said. “I think we’ll see a few more guys coming up with cramps, regardless of whether those are real or not.”

Despite the offense’s success, both head coach Kelly and center Kelce think they can increase the tempo of the attack even more.

“I know we can go faster,” Kelce said. “I think we went at a really good speed. There were times when we really put the foot on the pedal and were flying around out there, and there were times we eased it back a little bit. We definitely have plays we can still go faster with.”

“When you play that many snaps, you have to make sure you don’t run your own team into the ground,” Kelly said. “You always sense fatigue in the fourth quarter, no matter what team you’re on or what you did. The big thing is not to be as fatigued as the team you’re playing against.”

“I felt like it was slow,” the first-year Philadelphia Eagles coach said Tuesday. “I’m not joking. We need to do a better job. We left the ball on the ground too much. We didn’t get the ball to the officials. We could have sped things up from a process in between plays. That’s something we need to work on.”
