Hawks acquire Kristaps Porzingis in three-team deal

The Boston Celtics have gotten very aggressive in their attempt to shed salary this summer, with the team’s latest move being trading veteran big man Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal.

Along with potentially not having a big incentive to win during the 2025-26 season due to Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury, the Celtics’ approach seems to be saving as much money as they can, with the Porzingis trade being a step in the right direction.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Celtics acquire Georges Niang and a second-round draft pick in this deal with the Nets getting Terance Mann and the No. 22 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

The Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets agreed to a three-team deal Tuesday that saw the Celtics send center Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, while Terance Mann and Atlanta’s No. 22 pick headed to the Nets, and finally, Georges Niang and a second-rounder landed with the Celtics, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Not only did the Celtics shed a ton of salary by moving off Porzingis, but they also traded veteran guard Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, which is also a step in the right direction in terms of what the storied franchise wants to accomplish during the NBA offseason. Boston acquired Anfernee Simons in that deal.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Celtics make any other moves, as there’s been talk that Jaylen Brown and Derrick White could be on the trading block as well.
