Injured Derek Carr Can’t Jumpstart Saints Offense
Despite backing Jameis Winston to deputize in his absence, Saints quarterback Derek Carr played injured against the Buccaneers on Sunday.
New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara’s ominous postgame quotes betray a desperation to get the offense to click. The rut that lead to Derek Carr playing in spite of his banged up throwing shoulder.
“It’s been two years since we had that offense that was rolling,” Alvin Kamara said.Â
“Now we’re kind of in this rut of … it is what it is right now. What you see. Like I said, we’ve got to have some conversations about something. Because I don’t like losing.”

The 26-9 defeat to Tampa Bay wasn’t pretty for Derek Carr. He had just 127 yards on 23-of-37 passing for 3.4 yards per attempt. He took two sacks of a total 15 allowed by the Saints offense. As well as that, he lost a fourth quarter fumble.
New Orleans has failed to score more than 20 points in a game so far this season. Their average of 15.5 points per game in Weeks 1 – 4 is their fewest since 2007. The Saints have only scored four touchdowns so far in 2023.
“That’s no excuse for us playing the way we did today,” Carr said.
“Whatever it is that I have to do, I’ll do it. I just don’t want the shoulder to be an excuse for the way that we executed.”
