Las Vegas Tournament Mooted to Resolve NBA Season

The NBA is considering a revised play-in tournament to salvage the season as it searches for alternatives, according to CNBC.

The tournament would be held in Las Vegas, according to anonymous NBA executives who spoke to CNBC.

Such a tournament would save the postseason and finals, if the regular season can’t be resumed. However, it is subject to what happens with the Coronavirus pandemic, something nobody is sure of at present.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he doesn’t have “a good enough sense of how long a period this is going to be.” However, Silver said he wants to “believe we’re going to be able to salvage at least some portion of the season.”

Silver will be under immense pressure at the moment. Apart from the resolution of the NBA season, the league is also facing massive losses. The commissioner’s job now is not only to resume basketball, but to resume it in such a way that recoups the billions that the league has already lost.

Tony Ponturo, the CEO of Ponturo Management Group, said Silver will make the right decision.

“Adam will not rush it,” said Ponturo.

“I think he’s one person that will keep doing the right thing even if that means a financial hit for a year.”

As well as the league, the players stand to lose a substantial sum of money as a result of the pandemic. Their salaries are linked to games played, but would a tournament be a satisfactory solution for them?

Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum says that it depends on the format of the tournament.

“It depends on how the tournament is structured,” he said.

“I can’t say I would be happy with it or that I think it’s the right thing. I’d have to see how it’s structured. I think logistically, the NBA is in a position to experiment with many potential solutions.”
