Cavaliers’ Dennis Schroder Trade Could Signal a Much Bigger Move

With the start of training camp next month, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded veteran point guard Dennis Schroder and cash to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for guard Tre Mann.

The move appears intended to provide the Cavaliers with greater financial flexibility, as they continue to reconfigure their roster while keeping them below the salary cap second apron.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, it pushes them $32 million below the first apron and $44 million below the second apron. For the time being, the Cavaliers have the $6.1 million tax midlevel exception.

Beyond that, the Cavaliers are still in ongoing talks with star guard James Harden about bringing him back on a two- or three-year deal. Harden remains unsigned in free agency with not much of a market around him.

The Cavaliers acquired Harden before last season’s trade deadline, when he showcased that he still has plenty left in the tank to be a highly productive player while fitting well in the backcourt next to Donovan Mitchell, another playmaker with his scoring and passing.

In 26 regular-season games, he averaged 20.1 points, 7.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 0.8 steals while shooting 46.6 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc on 7.1 attempts per game.

Cleveland is also reportedly keeping tabs on two forwards in restricted free agent Peyton Watson and unrestricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. The latter had been linked to the Cavaliers since LeBron James chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.
