NBA News: Kevin Martin Agrees To Sign With San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs continue to bolster their roster in preparation for another deep run in the NBA playoffs. Along with bringing in veteran point guard Andre Miller, the Spurs have also locked up another notable player formerly of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Kevin Martin will sign with the Spurs after being bought out by the Timberwolves earlier this week:
Free-agent guard Kevin Martin has agreed to a deal to join the San Antonio Spurs, according to league sources.
As arguably the biggest threat to the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors this season, the Spurs brass has done everything within their power to make sure they have some insurance on the bench during the playoffs. Martin has bounced around the league quite a bit throughout his NBA career but has been a reliable offensive contributor on every team he’s played for thus far.
The 33-year-old guard can still be a force off the bench offensively and is a solid addition to Gregg Popovich’s roster in the final stretch of the regular season. As a result of playing a career-low 21.4 minutes per game this season for the Timberwolves, Martin’s scoring average has dipped to 10.6 per contest. Although his scoring is down, the veteran had to take a backseat to Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine in Minnesota with the Timberwolves intent in rebuilding with their young talent.
In 12 seasons in the NBA, Martin has averaged an impressive 17.6 points per game while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor and 38.5 from beyond the arc. Martin continues to be instant offense off the bench and will likely be a valuable asset for the Spurs as they look to dethrone the Warriors in the Western Conference.
