NBA Rumors: Timberwolves Targeting Free Agent PG Derrick Rose
The Derrick Rose experiment in New York simply didn’t work out. Rose will be looking for a new team this summer after a disappointing one-season stint with the New York Knicks.
Fortunately for Rose, the veteran point guard is drawing interest from a familiar face. Rose’s former Chicago Bulls head coach, Tom Thibodeau, appears to be interested in a reunion with him. The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly interested in signing Rose this summer, according to ESPN’s Ian Begley:
The Minnesota Timberwolves view Derrick Rose as a potential free-agent target this summer, league sources told ESPN.
Rose’s career has gone from extremely promising with an NBA MVP award back in 2011 to riddled with injuries and instability. The veteran point guard was formerly the face the Bulls franchise and Thibodeau’s superstar, but he hasn’t had much success or been able to stay healthy since being coached by Thibodeau.
Before the 2016-17 NBA season, Thibodeau took over as president and head coach of the Timberwolves. Minnesota is considered to be a team on the rise in the Western Conference with a talented young core led by Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins.
Although the Timberwolves have a talented point guard in Ricky Rubio and a young floor general in Kris Dunn, Thibodeau may want to bring in Rose due to the prior success they’ve had. Also, Rubio seems to be on his way out of Minnesota with talk of the New York Knicks showing interest in the veteran and willing to make a trade. Ironic considering the fact these two teams could’ve made a swap of these players during the season if they could figure out a way to make the numbers work.
