Bulls Land Major Scoring Boost as Norman Powell Cashes In

All-Star guard Norman Powell has found a new NBA home after agreeing to a two-year, $45 million deal with the Chicago Bulls.

Powell is coming off another highly productive campaign, averaging 21.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 38 percent from beyond the arc in his lone season with the Miami Heat.

The 33-year-old’s new contract gives him the flexibility to earn another lucrative deal in two years.

He was acquired by the Heat last July in a three-team trade from the LA Clippers. He excelled as one of Miami’s primary scorers, as it marked his second straight year averaging more than 21 points per game despite playing in only 58 games.

Powell’s departure from the Heat leaves a significant void, especially after the franchise gutted the roster to acquire two-time league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo last week. Following the move, the expectation was that Miami wouldn’t be able to retain his services due to the team’s limited financial space.

He will have the opportunity to flourish as one of the Bulls’ primary scorers while leading the team’s rebuild with its young core. Chicago has missed the playoffs in each of the last four seasons, coming off finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 31-51 record.

The Bulls have undergone significant change this offseason, beginning with moving on from longtime head coach Billy Donovan. The organization hired Tiago Splitter as his replacement last month in hopes of moving the team in the right direction.
