Bulls top Hawks in historic four-overtime thriller highlighted by Trae Young, Zach LaVine
The Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks on Friday night engaged in what turned out to be a historic contest that needed four overtimes for the Bulls to come out on top 168-161.
It was an incredible contest that featured many huge statistical numbers being reached. This was a game that saw their 329 combined points be the third-most points scored in a game trailing the 370 combined points from the Detroit Pistons and Denver Nuggets back in December 1983. It was also behind the 337 points that the Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs had back in 1982.
One of the biggest performances came from the Hawks’ standout rookie Trae Young, who had 45 points, 16 assists, and eight rebounds. This marked his third straight game notching at least 30 points and setting or matching his career high in scoring. It also made him the first rookie with 120 points in a three-game stretch since Hall of Famer Allen Iverson back in April 1997.
Young’s impressive outing also made him one of four players in NBA history to notch at least 45 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a single game as a rookie. He is also the first rookie to record 45 points and 10 assists since Hall of Famer Michael Jordan.
Meanwhile, guard Zach LaVine led the Bulls with a career-best 47 points in the win. It was a contest that featured plenty of back and forth action that proved to be both a thrilling and historic contest.
