Eastern Conference assistant coach blasts Jayson Tatum for being selfish
The Boston Celtics have stumbled through the first few weeks of the 2021-22 season, holding a 10-10 record.
The Celtics haven’t looked anywhere near a team that could make a strong push toward vying for an NBA title. It’s led to much outside criticism directed at Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s playing styles conflicting with each other.
An Eastern Conference assistant coach recently stirred the pot by voicing to Tim Bontemps of ESPN that Tatum only cares about winning on his terms.
“They’ve looked like [players that] legitimately don’t enjoy each other’s success, and it’s been like that for years,” an Eastern Conference executive said. “The fact it’s still rearing its head is not surprising in that regard.”
“Jayson Tatum is about Jayson Tatum,” an Eastern Conference assistant coach said. “I don’t think he cares about winning now, and if he does, it is on his terms.
“He doesn’t want to score 15 and win. He wants to score 39 and win.”
These comments strongly strike Tatum’s character as it gives the strong impression that he only cares about his number. The star forward has become one of the league’s top young talents, but Boston has failed to take the next leap forward.

The continued struggles have only made him and Brown easy targets to criticize. Tatum hasn’t caused any public issues or aired out internal problems to the media.
Ultimately, the narrative around him and Brown will only shift if they can guide the franchise toward NBA title contention.
