Mavericks superstar Kyrie Irving had surgery on broken left hand

Dallas Mavericks star point guard underwent surgery to repair a broken left hand that he suffered while training earlier this month.

Although the Mavericks didn’t provide a time frame for his recovery, Irving should be ready to go before the start of training camp in October.

The eight-time All-Star has become a key piece to the puzzle in Dallas alongside Luka Doncic, as the two helped guide the franchise to the NBA Finals. Irving has fit smoothly playing with Doncic, as he’s coming off another highly productive campaign in which he averaged 25.6 points and 5.2 assists while shooting 49.7% from the floor and 41.1% from 3-point range.

The 32-year-old was a significant offensive factor in the playoffs, averaging 22.1 points and 5.1 assists while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and 39 percent from beyond the arc in 22 games. That included posting seven 30-point performances, topped by a 40-point outing in the first round against the LA Clippers.

Irving is entering the second year of his three-year, $126 million deal, which will pay him $41 million next season. He also holds a $43.9 million player option for the 2025-26 campaign.

His contract status will underline the importance of another highly successful season to keep him for the long haul beyond his current deal.

The Mavericks are hoping their busy offseason, headlined by adding former All-Star guard Klay Thompson in free agency to a three-year, $50 million deal, will help push them over the top to vie for an NBA title.
