Rudy Gay says Spurs are ‘building character right now’
The San Antonio Spurs saw the final piece of their vaunted Big Three depart last offseason with Tony Parker joining the Charlotte Hornets.
This has set forth the next chapter for the franchise with their being the uncertainty of what may unfold with this squad of talent. With that in mind, veteran forward Rudy Gay isn’t looking to settle as a footnote to the franchise’s overall success, according to ESPN.
“I’d love the storybook, where we’d get together and win millions of games right away,” said Gay, speaking to the San Antonio Express-News. “But it’s going to take time. We’re just building character right now, that’s all.”
Gay is part of a team that is looking to establish themselves apart from the previous regime that helped lift the franchise to five NBA titles with their big three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Parker working together to earn four NBA titles.
The Spurs are currently in the seventh overall spot in the Western Conference as they are currently tied with the Utah Jazz. They are also just a game up over the L.A. Clippers, who hold the eighth overall position.
Gay has been a huge part of this push for the Spurs as he has been a consistent scoring option for the team. He is currently averaging 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 51.9 percent shooting from the floor and 43.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
The Spurs will have the chance to continue their playoff push in the second half of the season.
