Spurs Provide Concerning Victor Wembanyama Update Ahead of Game 3 vs. Blazers
San Antonio Spurs star big man Victor Wembanyama will travel with the team for the next two games of the first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wembanyama is in the concussion protocol after suffering that injury in the second quarter of Game 2’s loss to the Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.
Head coach Mitch Johnson voiced that the 22-year-old will be with the team in Portland, but stopped short of saying that he will play in Friday’s game.
“To my knowledge, we haven’t even had that discussion [about ruling Wembanyama out],” Johnson said via ESPN. “The protocol is the protocol. The league is who’s mostly at the top of that. We’ll just hope that he continues to progress. Whenever that timing is, that’s when it will be.
“We’ll just kind of keep going through the protocol, and hopefully he continues to progress. It’s pretty straightforward. So obviously, we hope he’ll be back at some point. But we’ll allow the protocol to play out. There’s nothing more important than his health.”
Given that the NBA requires a 48-hour window for the concussion protocol, the Spurs have a short time frame to determine whether Wembanyama will be ready to play in Game 3.

All that suggests that it’s more than likely that he will sit out Friday’s game and return for Game 4 on Sunday. The Spurs’ track record of erring on the side of caution when it comes to Wembanyama’s health only adds more credence to the belief he will miss one game.
Time will tell, but the Spurs are likely looking at the bigger picture.
