Troubled forward Miles Bridges signs new deal with Hornets

After floating through free agency,  forward Miles Bridges agreed to return to the Charlotte Hornets on a three-year, $75 million contract.

Bridges went through the market searching for sign-and-trade situations but chose to stay with the Hornets. He remains a key part of Charlotte’s young core group alongside All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball and second-year forward Brandon Miller.

The 26-year-old is coming off another productive campaign, during which he averaged 21.0 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor and 34.9 percent from beyond the arc in 69 games.

Bridges posted 40 games of at least 20 points scored, six with 30 or more points, and two 40-point outings. He also notched 19 double-doubles while he is the fourth player in franchise history to record back-to-back 40-point performances.

Bridges missed the first 10 games of last season due to a plea of no-contest for felony domestic abuse.

The Hornets have struggled to find their footing toward playoff contention. The franchise’s last trip occurred in 2016. Since then, Charlotte has failed to win 40 games all but once.

The Hornets have lost 50-plus games in each of the last two seasons, holding a 21-61 record last season.

Charlotte has been plagued by injuries with Ball missing significant time over that span. He played in 22 games last season and 36 games the campaign before.

The Hornets are hoping to build a strong core group that can finally take a step forward toward being a constant factor in the playoff picture.
