New York Jets Willing to Let No. 3 Pick Go

Last year the New York Jets made a blockbuster trade to move up in the NFL Draft and this year the Jets are open to move in the opposite direction if a deal arrives they like.

General Manager Mike Maccagnan told reporters at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday that the Jets had put their No. 3 pick overall up for sale.

The New York Jets GM said at this point the team felt good about having the No. 3 pick but if an opportunity presented itself to trade down, the team would look into it.

The Jets have several holes that need to be filled on the roster and need to recoup what they spent in March of last year when they moved up to No. 3 from No. 6 to select USC quarterback Sam Darnold. To do so, the Jets had to send three picks in the second round to the Indianapolis Colts.

In 2019, they are hoping a team in need of a quarterback will be willing to move up in the draft like they did last year. One such team is the New York Giants, who own this year’s No. 6 pick.

However, the Giants are not a team that makes many trades in the draft.

The Jets spoke with the Giants during the NFL Draft of 2016 about possibly trading up, but the Giants wanted more than the Jets were willing to give up. Last year, they never spoke with the Giants as the Giants had the No. 2 overall pick and selected Saquon Barkley out of Penn State.

The New York Jets had assumed the Giants asking price for the No. 2 pick would have included their first pick in the 2019 draft and they did not want to give that up.

If the Jets remain at No. 3 they could have one of three strong defensive players to choose from in Nick Bosa, Quinnen Williams and Josh Allen the top three non-quarterbacks in this year’s draft.

However GM Maccagnan has acknowledged the Jets might do better by having multiple picks rather than one pick high in the draft.
