49ers’ Kyle Shanahan’s interesting admission about Brock Purdy
The San Francisco 49ers fell short against the Los Angeles Rams at home on Sunday in a 42-26 loss.
The 49ers went another week without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, choosing to roll with Mac Jones to lead the way.
Jones produced against the Rams yet again with another strong outing, completing 33-of-39 passes for 319 yards with three touchdown passes to one interception. However, it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Los Angeles.
After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that the team could have started Purdy but decided to keep him on the bench for at least one more week.
“He could have gone, definitely,” Shanahan said via 49ersWebzone.com. “I just decided to hold him, not put him in that situation. . . . I do believe he’s closer and further along than what he was at that time, so hopefully, he’ll have a chance this week.”
The 49ers have continued to take the precautionary approach with Purdy’s recovery as he makes his way back from a toe injury that has kept him sidelined since Week 4 action.

San Francisco has been able to err on the side of caution due to the stable production and sustained success it’s had from Jones, who holds a 5-3 record as the starter.
It’s given Purdy plenty of time to allow his injury to heal fully and return to action when appropriate. Shanahan’s remarks make it resoundingly clear that the 49ers should see him back leading the charge next Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
