49ers reveal status of contract talks with Trent Williams
The San Francisco 49ers are heading into the offseason with lingering uncertainty around star left tackle Trent Williams’ future.
Williams is in the final year of his deal, which holds a $38.84 million cap hit that includes a $10 million option bonus that will be paid out in the coming weeks. The latter part has put a strong sense of urgency to rework the contract.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that the two sides are experiencing difficulty reaching a resolution. Despite that, general manager John Lynch voiced considerable optimism about the situation.
“What I’ll tell you is that in recent weeks I’ve met with both Trent and with his agent, Vincent Taylor, and had really good, productive and substantive meetings,” Lynch said via ESPN. “And so, here’s what I know. Trent loves being a Niner. We love having Trent as a Niner and it’s up to us to figure that out and to thread that needle.
“There are some unique circumstances in that we all know what Trent is as a player, how great of a player he’s been. He’s going to be 38 years old and so there’s some things that go into that, but I think we’re all on the same page and feel very positive about where that’s going.”
The 49ers clearly want to keep Williams in tow as he’s a significant part of their offensive line identity and remains one of the league’s premier left tackles.

The All-Pro voiced last month that he expected the team to rework his deal, with that likely coming in the way of a short extension to help provide the team with some salary cap relief for the 2026 season.
The clock is ticking on the 49ers to get something worked out soon. If not, Williams could suit up for another team next season.
