NFL: 4 quarterbacks poised to surprise in 2020

The NFL can be a cruel place for quarterbacks. We take a look at four quarterbacks who could make a comeback in 2020.

4. Matthew Stafford

Would you believe Stafford was on pace to throw for more than 5,000 yards last season before he got hurt? The Detroit Lions were actually playing respectable ball before Stafford succumb to injury, putting him and their hopes on ice.

Now, the former No. 1 overall pick returns to the field and he’s got weapons around him in second-year tight end T.J. Hockenson, running backs D’Andre Swift and Kerryon Jones, and receivers Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones. Don’t be surprised if Stafford has a Pro Bowl season in the loaded NFC.

3. Joe Burrow

From one top pick to another. Burrow comes to the Cincinnati Bengals with the hopes and dreams of the Queen City on his shoulders. While the team has a long, long way to go, there’s a good amount of offensive talent. For starters, Burrow has receivers A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd and fellow rookie Tee Higgins out of Clemson. Factor in running back Joe Mixon, and the supporting cast could be far worse.

Expect Burrow to put up some real numbers as a rookie on his way to significant talk about Offensive Rookie of the Year.

2. Derek Carr

If Carr can’t succeed with this group, it’s time for the Las Vegas Raiders to move on. The veteran signal-caller has playmakers galore on the field including running back Josh Jacobs, tight end Darren Waller, receivers Henry Ruggs III, Hunter Renfrow and Tyrell Williams, and a fantastic offensive line.

Nobody expects the Raiders to push the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, but Las Vegas should have a competent offense with a thriving quarterback. Carr completed 70 percent of his passes in 2019, and with Ruggs added to the mix and another year in the system, he should be even better.

1. Baker Mayfield

Mayfield is facing a critical year in his NFL career. Another former No. 1 overall pick, he’s getting his third head coach in as many seasons. This time, Cleveland hopes to find a winner in Kevin Stefanski, who is coming over from the Minnesota Vikings after being their offensive coordinator.

With Stefanski scheming the offense, Mayfield should be able to produce with receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, tight ends Austin Hooper and David Njoku, and running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Few teams have more talent than the Browns at the skill positions.
