5 things the NFL preseason taught us

The NFL preseason is over and done with for another year. So, we can do everybody’s favourite thing – draw too many conclusions from it. Below we take a look at five lessons from the 2019 NFL preseason.

5. Daniel Jones looks like he can play

Does it really matter that Daniel Jones was lighting up opposing defenses in the NFL preseason? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s a hell of a lot better than the alternative. When the New York Giants selected Jones with the No. 6 overall pick, most experts — including yours truly — laughed at the pick. However, Jones has arguably been the best of the rookie quarterbacks thus far. It’s hard not to be impressed by the eventual successor to Eli Manning.

4. The Redskins can’t block without Trent Williams

It’s become a very ugly, public feud between Trent Williams and the Washington Redskins. Williams hasn’t reported to the team this season in a dispute with the team’s medical staff, and the Redskins have refused to trade him despite requests to be dealt. Perhaps it’s because Washington can’t block any front four without its All-Pro on the left side. Whether it’s Case Keenum or Dwayne Haskins, an offensive line without Haskins means doom and pain in the pocket.

3. Darwin Thompson is another weapon for the Chiefs

Thompson was drafted in the sixth round out of Utah State to be a special teamer and backup running back for the Kansas City Chiefs. It appears general manager Brett Veach may have walked into a player far greater than that. Thompson starred in the first preseason games. In the fourth one against the Green Bay Packers, Thompson didn’t play a single snap, sitting with starter Damien Williams and the rest of the name players. Translation? The Chiefs see a youngster who is going to be a force this season.

2. Cowboys prepared to play without Zeke

The Dallas Cowboys need superstar running back Ezekiel Elliott to win the Super Bowl. They don’t however need him to win their first three games. With the emergence of running back Tony Pollard in the preseason, owner/general manager Jerry Jones has to believe pollard can do enough to help Dallas beat the Redskins, Giants and Miami Dolphins in the first three weeks of the season. Pollard has shown vision, balance and some wiggle, giving the Cowboys a nice option while Elliott mulls over his options.

1. Preseason football is finally over

Look, sometimes you need to state the obvious. We should all be thankful the next time we see an NFL game, it will have real implication. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears will be playing to kick off the league’s 100th season. No more nonsense.
