Bengals’ Joe Burrow open up about wrist surgery

Since the Cincinnati Bengals’ disappointing season opener loss to the New England Patriots, much of the dialogue remains around star quarterback Joe Burrow’s health.

The discussion stems from his surgically repaired wrist limiting his throwing ability. Broadcast cameras during the game showed him grabbing a water bottle in an uncommon manner.

He was also seen moving around and flexing his wrist throughout the season opener loss. Despite that, Burrow voiced that his wrist affecting him from making throws down the field.

“That’s part of ligament injuries,” Burrow said via ESPN. “If you don’t move it, you’re going to lose it, so I’m always moving it around, keeping it loose, keeping my mobility the way it’s supposed to be, so it’s going to continue to happen.”

As long as the Bengals falter, Burrow will continue to hear that dialogue around him. He clearly struggled against the Patriots with only 164 passing yards while only six of his 29 passes for the game were for more than 10 or more air yards.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati was a 7.5-point favorite against New England, which was the biggest Week 1 upset since 2018.

Beyond that, Burrow’s primary focus lays on helping his team avoid a 0-2 start to the season for the fifth in the last six seasons. That comes with a significant challenge in Week 2 on the road against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Burrow will need to perform at a high level if the Bengals want to upset Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
