Bills GM blasts Sean McDermott for wanting to draft Keon Coleman
Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula dropped a bombshell revelation during a press conference on Wednesday following the aftermath of firing longtime head coach Sean McDermott.
As general manager, Brandon Beane responded to wide-ranging questions from the media, and things heated up when he was asked about the quality of the team’s wide receiver play and the performance of Keon Coleman.
Pegula quickly interjected during that portion as he shed light that it wasn’t Beane who made the call to take the former Florida State standout in the second round, but instead that the coaching staff convinced him to select him.
“I’ll address the Keon situation. The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon,” Pegula said via ESPN. “I’m not saying Brandon wouldn’t have drafted him, but [Coleman] wasn’t his next choice.
“That was Brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff who felt strongly about the player. And you know, he’s taken — for some reason — heat over it, and not saying a word about it. But I’m here to tell you the true story.”
It’s been difficult to ignore the regression in Coleman’s play as he struggled throughout his second NFL season. The Bills hoped he could leap toward stardom, but he instead notched only 38 receptions for 404 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

It features him failing to be disciplined by the team in November while he was a healthy scratch for four games. Meanwhile, he fell short of 50 or more receiving yards in every game after the season opener.
There is a clear disconnect between Coleman and the direction the franchise wants to move. Time will tell if he will remain in the team’s future plans.
