Broncos decide to move on from head coach Nathaniel Hackett
The Denver Broncos’ disastrous 2022 season took another disappointing turn after the franchise elected to part ways with first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
The decision came the Broncos suffered an embarrassing 51-14 loss on Christmas Day against the depleted Los Angeles Rams led by Baker Mayfield.
The Broncos ownership group chose to rip the band-aid off and surprisingly fire Hackett before he finished his first season at the helm.
“Following extensive conversations with [general manager] George [Paton] and our ownership group, we determined a new direction would ultimately be in the best interest of the Broncos,” Penner said in a statement via ESPN. “This change was made now out of respect for everyone involved and allows us to immediately begin the search for a new head coach.
“Moving forward, we will carefully evaluate every aspect of our football operations and make whatever changes are necessary to restore this franchise’s winning tradition.”
The Broncos initially believed that the pairing of Hackett and offseason addition Russell Wilson could lead to sustained success. However, things have gone sideways as Wilson has performed like a shell of himself in his first year in Denver.

The organization has already committed itself to a five-year, $245 million extension with the former Pro Bowl quarterback, making him essentially untouchable. All that put Hackett on the chopping block to lose his job.
Denver will now move in another direction, hoping to bring in a head coach that can help Wilson return to performing like one of the league’s top quarterbacks.
