Broncos trade for former first-round pick QB Zach Wilson
In the days ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos acquired quarterback Zach Wilson and a seventh-round pick from the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round selection.
Wilson will have the opportunity to vie for the starting job next season against Jarrett Stidham. The Broncos will likely add another quarterback through the draft, which could see them attempt to move up from the 12th overall pick.

“Look, I mean, do we have to draft a quarterback?” Broncos coach Sean Payton said last week via ESPN. “You’d say, man, it sure looks like we have to draft a quarterback and yet, it’s got to be the right fit, the right one. And if you had the tip sheets as to who everyone else was taking, it would be easier to answer that question…That’s the puzzle here.”
Wilson is in the fourth year of his rookie deal, which includes a fifth-year option worth $22.4 million. The Broncos are not expected to pick up that option, which would allow Wilson to hit free agency in 2025.
The former second-overall pick saw his three-year tenure with the Jets marred by injuries and inconsistency. His struggles through his first two years led the Jets to acquire three-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers next offseason.

Wilson’s departure gives him a fresh start to potentially jumpstart his career. He has been relegated to backup status, which will be a pivotal 2024 campaign that could determine his NFL future ahead.
Meanwhile, the Jets are moving forward without questions concerning their confidence in Rodgers. New York has moved all in with their moves this offseason.
Rodgers is moving through his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon and should be ready before next season. Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor is currently slated as the backup.
